Ms Mills will work with chief executive Robert Pirrie in assuming responsibility for the society’s administration and consultancy services to a portfolio of third-party charities and other organisations.

These changes follow the departure of Anna Bennett after 13 years with the society. She has become the head of the Palace of Holyroodhouse with the Royal Collection Trust.

Deputy keeper Mandy Laurie and chief executive Robert Pirrie paid tribute to her contribution to the society.
