X to pay $10m to Trump to settle lawsuit

Elon Musk’s X is to pay $10 million to US president Donald Trump to settle his lawsuit over his suspension in 2021 from what was then Twitter.

Mr Trump was banned from most major social media platforms after hundreds of his supporters stormed the US Capitol building on 6 January 2021 in a bid to overturn his election defeat by Joe Biden.

Meta agreed last month to pay $25 million to Mr Trump to settle similar proceedings relating to his suspension from Facebook and Instagram.

The Wall Street Journal, which broke the news of the Meta settlement, reports that X has now followed suit with a $10 million settlement agreement.

Mr Trump’s Twitter account was reinstated in November 2022, a month after Mr Musk, now his close ally, bought the platform for $44 billion.

According to the WSJ, Mr Trump had considered dropping the lawsuit against X after Mr Musk backed and donated around $250 million to his presidential campaign.

Google is the last Big Tech company still being sued by Mr Trump, in relation to his ban from YouTube, though there is wide expectation of a settlement in the near future.
