What to expect
At Thorntons, our Compliance and Risk Department plays a vital role in ensuring we meet legal and regulatory obligations while supporting the firm’s ongoing success. As our AML Risk Manager, you’ll be at the heart of our risk management strategy, working closely with our MLRO and MLCO to develop, implement, and enhance our AML compliance framework. Your work will ensure that risks are proactively identified, assessed, and mitigated - helping to safeguard our firm and our clients.
In this role you will:
• Develop and implement AML risk management strategies, policies, and procedures that align with evolving regulatory requirements.
• Monitor the effectiveness of risk mitigation measures and refine them as needed.
• Ensure our policies remain fully up to date with the latest legislation, providing expert advice on necessary updates.
• Prepare clear, insightful AML management reports and oversee the annual AML Certificate process.
• Provide support and advice on AML to colleagues.
• Liaise with our internal audit function on AML compliance audits and report on findings.
• Collaborate with the MLRO and MLCO to design and deliver an engaging AML training programme for staff.
• Liaise with auditors as and when required.
• Manage the AML team within the wider Compliance & Risk Department.
What we’re looking for
We’re seeking a proactive and detail-focused AML professional who can drive risk management excellence across our firm. The ideal candidate will have:
• A strong understanding of AML risk management principles and best practices, ideally within a law firm or professional services setting.
• In-depth knowledge of Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds (Information on the Payer) Regulations 2017 and the AML guidance for the legal sector (LSAG).
• A proven track record of developing and implementing risk management strategies at a firm-wide level.
• A degree (or equivalent relevant experience), ideally complemented by a professional qualification in Risk Management, Business, or Law.
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in risk management software and tools.
