The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland (JABS) invites applications from suitably qualified individuals who wish to be considered for appointment to the judicial office of legal member of the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland for any of the following Chambers:

• General Regulatory Chamber
• Health and Education Chamber
• Housing and Property Chamber
• Local Taxation Chamber
• Social Security Chamber

The business of the First-tier Tribunal is diverse and rewarding, from social security benefits cases to highly sensitive applications in relation to educational provision for children with additional support needs, property related decisions and transport appeals.

This is an important opportunity to contribute to justice in Scotland.

The roles are part-time and paid on a daily fee basis. Appropriate travel and subsistence expenses for tribunal work will also be met. The time commitment is expected to be in the order of 10 to 30 days per year, depending on the volume of work of the particular Chamber. Please note that you will not be entitled to a pension in respect of the role.

You may select more than one if you feel that you have the skills, knowledge and experience or the ability to develop these to fulfil the role for more than one Chamber.

The Legal Member Briefing Pack, provided by the Judicial Office for Scotland, provides applicants with information about the role and the work of each of the Chambers. Individual Chamber role profiles are included in the Guidance Note.

We encourage applications from people with a wide and diverse range of backgrounds including different legal experience. The principles of fair and open competition will apply and recommendation for appointment will be made solely on merit.
