No new trials will commence in the Crown Court unless they are expected to last three days or less, the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett of Maldon, has announced. He said: "We must make every effort to maintain a functioning court system in support of the administration of justice and rule of law."

Thousands of sitting days have been restored to the Crown Court following comments made by the Lord Chief Justice. Lord Burnett of Maldon said the hearings were “listed further into the future” than they had been in recent years, The Times reports.
Hundreds of Crown Court judges face disqualification because they have not spent enough time hearing trials. Recorders must sit for at least 15 or 30 days per year, depending on experience, to keep their role.
